The Freuds fled Vienna, Austria, in 1938, after Anna was briefly detained. Freud was seriously ill with mouth cancer and on the day in question was taking a large dose of morphine. Freud did not believe in God, despite his early training in Catholicism and Judaism.

Freud’s final intellectual visitor in this fictional story is C. S. Lewis (Matthew Goode), a 45-year-old Oxford don and Christian apologist who rediscovered. The film follows a conversation between Freud and Lewis, with various flashbacks, including Freud’s youth and Lewis’s experiences in World War I. The film also touches on Anna’s relationship with her father and Dorothy Burlingame (Jodie Balfour), a former patient of Sigmund’s and Anna’s close friend.

The film also celebrates Lewis’s conversion and unusual relationship with Jenny Moore (Orla Brady), the mother of Lewis’ wartime friend Paddy Moore (George Andrew-Clark). Freud’s Last Session" Freud and Lewis go head-to-head on their opponent’s view of God, and neither of them gets hit. Hopkins and Goode are excellent, although they are hampered by a rather flat script. It was a kind of game without much direction.
