Gabriel Graham Gasco – The Best of Gabriel Graham Gasco
It is disappointing to watch a film that is supposedly moving along a certain trajectory, but which constantly stumbles on the path necessary to achieve this goal. Writer-director Laura Lucchetti adapted Cesare Pavese’s 1949 novel about an impressionable 17-year-old dressmaker (Yile Yara Vianello) who falls in love with an artist’s model (Deva Cassel), and the film moves slowly (and with many).
overly long detours) toward what seems , a predetermined result
But even when this proposal, apparently, approaches this goal, it makes another unexpected turn to the left and subsequently leads to what the director herself recognizes as an intentionally ambiguous conclusion. Consequently, this is the film that will most likely leave many viewers scratching their heads and asking, “What’s the point of all this?” The picture is supposed to touch on a topic that was considered taboo during the creation of the story and the writing of the book, but this goal was not achieved as clearly as it could have been.
As a result, whatever noble intentions lay behind the initiation of this production, they are decisively obscured in the final version
There are also some fleeting references to the fascist socio-political conditions of the time (elements not included in the source material), but they are never developed in too much detail, making their inclusion seem like unnecessary afterthoughts. To The Beautiful Summer’s credit, it has beautiful cinematography, well-chosen locations that showcase the beauty of Turin, and a stirring soundtrack as a whole.
