Chronology
Charles, a retiree, finds new life by responding to a private investigator’s complaint and becomes a mole in a secret nursing home investigation. Michael Schur was inspired to write “A Man On the Inside” after watching the Chilean documentary “The Mole Agent.” He says: “The documentary ‘The Mole Agent’ is very powerful because it evokes very similar feelings in people of all ages, ethnicities and genders, and I would describe that feeling very simply as: ‘I have to call my mom.’” We tried to do something similar with the tone of our show: does our show significantly contribute to the feeling that makes us call our mothers? Ted Danson (76) plays Charles (76), a retired engineering professor who lives in San Francisco. He is also the producer of this series, which stands out from most others by avoiding too much dialogue, using obscene language.
They are really very clean and therefore more enjoyable
In the story, his wife may have died a year ago from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He is healthy, but perhaps bored with his daily life. He likes to read magazines and newspapers, and he often is cutting out an interesting magazine to send to his married daughter in Sacramento. One day, through a cut-out, he sees a small, short ad.
Charles will be the key
We are looking for someone between the ages of 75 and 85 for a specific job. This leads him to a private investigator hired by a man whose mother lives in some fancy nursing home in San Francisco. Some valuable jewelry has been stolen, and the son wants the thief caught. So he is hired to check out the place, observe, and report back as the person who uncovers what is going on.
My wife and I enjoyed streaming it
Ted Danson is simply perfect in this role, which he plays with great humor. The question of who was the thief quickly becomes less about who was the thief and more about relationships. The characters are played by a great cast, many of whom are old favorites we have known for about 50 years. After watching the first three episodes in one night, we watched the last five episodes in one sitting after our usual steak and wine dinner on Saturday night.
One of the most entertaining episodes we’ve seen
The ending sets up a sequel, I hope they pull it off.
