A New York Tale Written by Jem Finer, Shane McGowan Starring The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl
This 6-part Netflix spy thriller promised a lot but ultimately fell short of what it could have. With an A-list cast including Keira Knightley as the gun, the ninja-slashing hero and Ben Whishaw as her former mentor and now colleague, expectations were high. They’re both agents for a secret mercenary spy organization called the Black Doves, controlled by Sarah Lancashire, who does her best Judi Dench “M” impression in a ghastly platinum blonde.
The trio worked together, but alone, trying to expose a vast conspiracy
It certainly starts with a bang, as we see three young men murdered in central London. A separate plot involves the off-screen death of the Chinese ambassador to Britain, whose daughter, who holds a central position in the party, has also untimely disappeared, threatening all sorts of international political conflict. It’s no big surprise when the two developments later converge, with both stories overlapping with Knightley and Whishaw’s activities, especially since, as well as being married to the government’s defence minister, she has been drawn into the political events surrounding the ambassador’s death, and she also had a passionate affair with one of the three killed at the beginning.
Everything is resolved in the end, I felt like I had fallen somewhere between James Bond-type fantasy and Le Carré-type realism, with escapism unfortunately winning out in the end
Several other characters are drawn into the kaleidoscopic narrative as Knightley and Whishaw are drawn deeper and deeper into an increasingly unfathomable plot as the body count piles up around them in mountainous proportions, sometimes in their arms, while Whishaw still has time to rekindle an old romance. Directed with obvious and reliable performances from its A-list stars, it somehow fell short of its initial promise, in my opinion, in a plot that relied too much on coincidence, gun violence and quirky, unconventional characters. When I first started watching it, I was almost tempted to watch the rest of the series — it seemed so good — but I’m afraid it started to show cracks by episode 4, with no sharp dialogue and quick jokes to make up for it (and there were some good ones).

It returned for a tense and exciting finale, even if it relied heavily on exposition and didn’t seem to know when to stop. It did eventually work, though, and even did a Die Hard-style Christmas tie-in, but ultimately it all felt too contrived, convoluted, and confusing to really work for me.
